Butterfly Meadow

This 1.3-acre field, just across the road from St Mary’s Church, below the graveyard, was given to the church by the Courage family early in the last century for eventual use as a graveyard. In 2005, recognising that the site would not be needed for this purpose for many years, we asked for ideas about how the meadow could be used for more immediate community benefit, and the idea of the Butterfly Meadow was born. Today it is a significant nature conservation area, lovingly cared for by Bill Hindley together with volunteers from the church, Essex Wildlife Trust and Our Grieving Hearts charity (ourgrievinghearts.co.uk). A group of volunteers meets in the meadow from 2–4pm on the second Tuesday of every month to complete various maintenance tasks — please join us if you can.
